Health Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

There are many uses for Apple Cider Vinegar* (ACV) that are proven and have been used for ages.  Apple cider vinegar is a type of vinegar made by the fermentation of apple cider. During the fermentation process, sugar in the apple cider is broken down by bacteria and yeast into alcohol and then into vinegar. Like other types of vinegar, apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid and it also contains some lactic, citric and malic acids.

Only purchase organic, unfiltered, and unprocessed apple cider vinegar. When you look into the bottle, you should see a cobweb-like substance, which is the “mother of vinegar”, and can make the vinegar look slightly congealed. It’s the only way apple cider vinegar should be consumed.

According to Patricia Bragg, N.D., Ph.D. …

“Vinegar can do everything from relieving muscle pain from exercise, balancing pH levels, soothing sore throats, and normalizing weight and helping to maintain levels of cholesterol already in the normal range. Externally, it is effective in supporting healthy skin and hair. Use it topically to give yourself a vinegar facial for toning or clearing up non-cystic acne and exfoliating dry dull skin. Gently rub your skin with a soft cotton ball dipped in vinegar and watch your skin glow! It’s also great for animals. Use it as a soothing after-bath rinse for cats and dogs to eliminate dry skin. It’s so easy to incorporate vinegar into your daily diet. When you wake up in the morning just make a delicious cocktail using 2 teaspoons of raw, organic apple cider vinegar, and if you need a sweetener, use organic honey, 100% maple syrup, or molasses to taste. If you are diabetic, use the sweet substitute stevia. I recommend you use only distilled water. Here are just a few health uses …

1. Optimized Nutrient Absorption and Improved Digestion

ACV is high in acetic acid.  Acetic acid increases your body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients from the food you eat. Drinking water with ACV before meals can help you to get more nutrition from the foods you eat.  A few tablespoons may help to improve digestion.  Apple cider vinegar can also be very helpful in reducing gas and bloating. Just take a tablespoon of ACV diluted in water or tea before a meal. It can also help ameliorate symptoms of heartburn. Take a dose as soon as you feel heartburn symptoms coming on.  ACV also improves bowel movement on an as needed basis … apple cider vinegar’s acidity aids in detoxifying and cleansing the digestive tract and cleaning out the colon.  ACV can help the body remove toxic waste more efficiently before it has time to do damage and it also helps to detoxify the liver. Add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to a 1 or 2 liter filtered water bottle. Drink this throughout the day to cleanse your body, liver and kidneys.

2. Eliminate Fungus/Yeast

If you are dealing with a candida yeast overgrowth or foot/skin fungus, ACV may provide you with a solution. Add 1 teaspoon ACV to a glass of water and drink before each meal. At first your candida may seem to worsen, caused by the detoxification, but it will improve after it is under control.

To get rid of skin or toe fungus, soak feet in ACV or apply on the affected area. It will give a burning sensation, so if you have a sensitive skin, it is best to dilute with water.

3. Rinse For Healthy And Shiny Hair/Hair Loss

ACV can be used as a rinse for your hair after shampooing to add healthy body and shine. Use ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and a cup of cold water. Pour through your hair after shampooing several times a week.  It may also help reduce hair loss.

4. Whiten Your Teeth

ACV can help remove stains from your teeth.  Rub your teeth with ACV and rinse thoroughly afterwards.  Don’t repeat this treatment more than once or twice a week, due to possible enamel erosion.

5. Green Cleaning

Mix ½ cup ACV with ½ cup water to clean microwaves, bathroom and kitchen surfaces, sinks/tubs, windows, and mirrors. Add the mixture in a spray bottle and it couldn’t be simpler. For the tougher stains, use undiluted ACV. For toilet cleaning, pour undiluted ACV in your toilet and let sit overnight. Try ACV as a dishwashing detergent instead of your normal dish detergent; just mix ½ cup ACV with 1 cup of water.

By utilizing orange or lemon peels with ACV (in jar and shaken for 10 days), the peels will release oils to give it fresh scent and antimicrobial properties.

Baking soda and apple cider vinegar is an amazing combination that has many uses.  As a drain cleaner, sprinkle 1/4 cup baking soda down the drain, then add 1/2 or 1 cup apple cider vinegar and let it bubble for 15 minutes, then rinse with hot water. This is a much safer alternative to dangerous and toxic drain cleaners. 

6. All-natural Flea Repellent For Your Pets

Mix one part vinegar with one part water and add to a spraying bottle. Moisten well the coat of your pet with this mixture once a day, for a few days to a week, and all fleas should be eliminated.

7.  Supplementation for Animals

Some holistic health practitioners recommend that ACV be placed in a dog’s drinking water but it may be better placed in fresh food if you prefer to keep additives out of the drinking water.  Use 1 teaspoon for small dogs and 1 tablespoon. for medium-large dogs.

8.  Fresh Produce Cleanse

According to Dr. Mercola, Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the best natural agents for removing certain pesticides and bacteria from your fresh produce. Use a solution of 10% vinegar to 90% water as a bath to briefly soak produce. Just place your vegetables or fruit in the solution, swish it around, and rinse thoroughly.

Don’t use this process on fragile fruits (like berries), since they could be damaged in the process or soak up too much vinegar through their porous skins.

9.  Skin Care

While one of the promised benefits of detoxification is clear skin, anyone who has done any type of intensive detox would most likely agree that the road to clear skin can be fraught with blemishes. As your body releases toxins from your blood and tissue, some toxins make their exits through the skin in the form of pimples, rashes and other angry red eruptions.

You can use apple cider vinegar as an astringent, by soaking a washcloth/cotton pad in diluted ACV and applying it to your face. Or, you can simply dab it right onto blemishes to dry them out and heal them.

It’s amazing how smooth your skin feels after applying ACV; it tightens and plumps it a bit, and can help reduce or minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

10.  Deodorant

Most commercial deodorants are antiperspirants, which block your ability to sweat. Since sweat is one of your body’s natural means of detoxification, blocking your ability to sweat can block your ability to detoxify. Plus, most commercial deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum and a load of toxic, dangerous chemicals and synthetic fragrances, so you want to avoid them anyway.

You can actually use apple cider vinegar as a natural deodorant! Apple cider vinegar absorbs and neutralizes stinky scents. Simply rub a bit of ACV in your underarms and it will absorb and minimize body odors. The vinegary smell dissipates once it dries.

 

*Apple cider vinegar may interact with diuretics, laxatives, and medicines for diabetes and heart disease, so if you’re planning to use it on a daily basis, be sure to consult your doctor to avoid interactions with the medicines you’re taking.

There are some suggested uses of ACV for diabetes, cancer and other types of diseases; however, I do not feel that there have been enough scientific studies to warrant talking about those uses yet.  Stay tuned though as more research is accomplished on Apple Cider Vinegar!
