Advertising on Craigslist

Advertising on Craigslist is a great way to reach millions of potential customers. Unlike other advertising opportunities, there is very little risk involved in posting on Craigslist. Advertising on Craigslist is free, except for job housing postings. There are some fees for advertising in a few target cities through Craigslist. But your ad will remain active for 30 days, so it usually is a good deal. Users have to agree to the terms of service and follow specific rules when posting.

Reaching Potential Customers on Craigslist

Advertising your products or services on Craigslist is a good idea because of its large audience of potential customers. The Craigslist fact sheet reveals the amount of traffic it receives each month for each target area. According to this information, Craigslist receives about four billion page views each month.  Ten million people use Craigslist each month.

With so many visitors using Craigslist each month, the advertising possibilities are limitless. But there are no guarantees that any of these visitors will be interested in your products or services. Like any marketing campaign, your ads on Craigslist must be intriguing, informative, and in a location where you will reach your target audience.

Finding Your Target Audience on Craigslist

The key to taking advantage of Craigslist’s huge traffic numbers is to target your advertising.  The key to reaching your target audience on Craigslist is to place your ad in the most appropriate categories. Craigslist has specific categories for every conceivable business product or service. Sometimes it is appropriate to place an ad in more than one category. This is acceptable as long as it does not cross the line to spamming the category.

If there is not a specific category for the products or services you offer, there are a couple of options. Business owners can place an ad in the small business section where it might be found by those doing a search in this category. Alternately, you can contact Craigslist to suggest the addition of a new category. They might be willing to oblige if they believe this category warrants being added.

The Difference between Advertising and Spamming

Advertising on Craigslist is one thing, but spamming is quite another. Placing an ad in an appropriate category of Craigslist is acceptable. However, placing the same ad in nearly every category of Craigslist is considered spam. Spam is ineffective for a number of reasons. Potential customers who see a particular ad in several different locations will recognize it as spamming. They will ignore your ad or report it to Craigslist as spam. If Craigslist detects ad spamming, they will delete all of your ads and may ban your ads from Craigslist. You don’t want that to happen, so just abide by the rules.
