2009 Business as Usual – NOT!

What The Economic Downturn means to Network Marketing

Try as we may to disregard it, the global economic downturn will affect your network marketing business. Business in 2009 is NOT going to be anything like it has been in the past. That is not to say the economic impact is necessarily a bad thing, no, it is just going to be different, very different. With the credit markets in shambles, the real estate market in the tank and spendable wages on the slide, the smart network marketer is well advised to take a hard look at their prospecting methods and approaches.

Two factors are going to be prominently at play this year, well actually three.

In our current economic situation people are going to naturally look to conserve their cash. Although that may not be the smartest tactic, according to Robert Kiyosaki, the majority will hoard their cash. Essential purchases will become the priority as impulse buying is reigned in. So, getting someone to part with an initial sign up fee will require they perceive value in their purchase well beyond the cash outlay. That will demand the networker develop personal skills to expertly share benefits so a prospect understands the power of this particular purchase.

Of equal importance is the second factor, the need for people to take control of their lives, break the bonds of dependence on an employer for their financial security. Many feeling insecure in their employment will consider alternative sources of income. Those conscious of the shift from employer based income to self-generated income will seek new opportunities to fulfill that thinking. The wise networker will seek out these people in off-line methods away from the “dog chasing its tail” mentality on the Internet. The use of warm market, local advertising, home intros and such will broaden their prospecting base.

Finally, the third factor, and probably the most critical, is fear. This fear factor occurs in the real world and shows up as “fear of the unknown”. None of us, let me repeat that, none of us know how this economic shift is going to play out. Uncertainty is the only thing we can count on, along with increased levels of stress. Those who choose to do nothing are assured to ride the roller coaster without the benefit of a brake or directional control. It’s like driving a car down the highway with no steering wheel and no brake pedal, the “driver” is just along for the ride. Offering a prospect personal control over income and finances will give you an extreme edge.

Obviously, each of these factors, and probably several not here mentioned, will play into your prospecting and recruiting methodology and success in 2009. One thing is for sure, your network marketing business plan for 2009 cannot run profitably on a 2008 platform. Plan accordingly.

Being a Network Marketing Leader – Learning to Think for Yourself

There is a phrase I’m pretty certain everyone has heard - “Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way”. Did you know it was first penned by Thomas Paine, the radical propagandist and voice of the common man, during the American Revolutionary period? In respects it aptly applies to network marketing and being a network marketing leader.

If you are a network marketer at some time you had to have started by being a follower. You started by knowing nothing about the industry and were typically at the mercy of your upline sponsor for training. You did what ever they were trained to do. If you were very, very lucky your sponsor had some industry savvy and you advanced. But, it was and remains pretty much a roll of the dice for the new person.

Every astute network marketing sponsor wants their followers to develop into leaders. It assures duplication, leverage and growth. The tricky part is we all typically follow only one upline sponsor at a time. We get a single limiting perspective of the industry.

The question then becomes how to get the knowledge to transform from follower to a leader? How do those who want to seriously work the business begin thinking for themselves and begin taking on a leadership role?

To become a leader one will have to develop one’s self, begin to do the things leaders do, even when it is uncomfortable, even when one fails. Leaders learn to and do think for themselves. Leaders surround themselves with like minded leaders. Leaders look outside the proverbial “box” to innovate as well as duplicate.

A quick word of caution is proffered if you should choose to go through the process of becoming a leader and learning to think for yourself. Many followers proclaim to be a network marketing leader with no veracity to their claim. They think they are leaders when they are actually followers doing what their leader told them to do. In reality, they are being taught what to think, thus thinking for yourself becomes a necessary requirement.

When someone distinguishes that they are a follower merely regurgitating what their leader put in their thoughts they have actually broken a barrier between being a follower and taking on true leadership.

--- That was it. Here’s my response to him. ---

Hi Jack,

No problem. With all that you have going on I guess it's understandable. The home owners must be all over your backside to sell, sell, sell and at my price or better. Ouch! We're stuck with our home here in Miami until the eco shifts.

As far as the emails go when I get over 200 to deal with my stomach starts to cramp. I like to manage the quality of my leads and, of course, the percentage that are converting. Different philosophies, I guess.

The reason I am in network marketing, besides reducing my j.o.b. stress and enjoying the remainder of life, is to fund teaching our low glycemic weight management and healthy eating class. Those who have taken it have ALL had very positive results and my wife and I are passionate about it. http://fat2lean.net

Hope we can keep in touch. Be sure to take care of your health and get that stress level down. Work stress, to the degree you appear to have it, produces free radicals and without a good antioxidant your body is going to "rust" or worse. ;-)

Our best thoughts,

RICK

I certainly hope he gets the point. Seems that his life is frantic and completely stressed out and frankly not the way any of us should have to live. NO business is worth sacrificing your health over.

It's vitally important to reduce the oxidizing effects that stress and free radicals have on your body and your health. Let's talk.

Surfs Up, Surfs Down!

I got my best surf board down and all waxed up today, put on my wet suit, sat down at the computer - 'cause I was going web surfing! Whoo Hoo!

I paddled out looking to catch a monster wave. It didn't take long for me to find one. The thing was huge, colorful, alluring and practically promised instant wealth. It was so full of bull**** I wiped out immediately and just about broke a nail on my clicking finger.

Here's what I saw, these headlines below broke over me like the tons of raw sewage that they are. What do you see here?

- - - - - - - -
"DIET COMPANY WILL PAY YOU $6000/MONTH TO PROCESS ORDERS AT HOME!"
- - - - - - - -
"EARN (((($72,000/YEAR)))) TAKING DIET ORDERS ON YOUR COMPUTER"
- - - - - - - -
"Within 10 minutes you can start Making Money in the $100 Billion Dollar Diet Industry right from your Home Computer, with the Hottest Selling Diet in the USA!"
- - - - - - - -

Now, I'm not picking on the diet and weight management community, please don't misunderstand. These ads could have come from anyone's industry.

But, I almost lost my lunch. And, sadder than me almost missing up my keyboard is that a lot of people, unknowing and innocent people, will be wiped out on network marketing forever because they want to believe it's just that easy.

Tell the truth. How many people will be eternally turned off by network marketing because of the greed and ego in those ad headlines?

If your company or upline is promoting using ad come-ons like this don't you be the one to follow blindly. Don't do it!

Think for yourself!
