Are You Scared About The Next Pet Food Recall?

The last major commercial pet food recall killed about 100 pets and there were about 4000 complaints logged. Many of the pets affected that survived will suffer some kind of ailment for the remainder of their lives.  I counted about 27 pet food recalls this year (2007) alone. There have been many recalls since 1995 and most we never heard anything about.  Pet food recalls will most likely continue?

We were scared to death when we heard pet food was killing pets. So I did my research and now we only feed our dogs and cats a holistic, safe, healthy pet food developed by a veterinarian that loves pets. Please take a moment to compare your pet food with ours . Just click on dog food then “compare to your brand.”

That brings us to the question, what do they put in commercial pet food? You might be surprised. Please take time to read this wonderfully in-depth article from the Animal Protection Institute titledGet The Facts: What’s Really in Pet Food."

To find out what is really in the pet food you buy you need to be able to read the labels on commercial pet food bags and cans! Clever ads with flashy packaging doesn’t mean what you buy contains the nutrition your pet really needs to live a long and healthy life.

Dogs and cats have a life expectancy of about 25 to 30 years. Yet they die on an average at age 11. So what’s the problem?  From what I’ve been reading it could definitely be what we feed them?

I’m sure that every one of you feels like your pet is part of the family. I know we do. You may think that commercial pet food manufacturers are devoted to producing a pet food that will benefit your pet’s health and welfare. Yet that may not always be true.

Current pet food regulations are lax and sometimes not even enforced. Pet food companies often use ingredients that you would never think of feeding your pet. For example only about half of a food animal is used for human consumption. The rest called animal by-products (hoofs, bones, intestines, heads, fat and more is used for things like pet food, fertilizer, cattle and poultry feed and other products.

Commercial pet food companies also use ingredients like corn, wheat, gluten and soy (soy often replaces meat) not easily digested that causes stress on your pet’s internal organs.

The commercial pet food industry may also uses chemicals and preservatives that are not good for your pet. Like the preservatives Butylated Hydroxyanisole and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHA and BHT) to extend shelf life. These chemicals have been liked to weight loss, damage to liver, kidneys and other organs, skin problems, hair loss, behavior problems and birth defects.

The pet food industry is a 15-billion dollar a year industry and because of that you probably won't see anything change very quickly. So it's up to you to learn to read labels and to seek out the best pet food you can find.
